Vicarious Snow Day

St. John's is in the middle of a huge blizzard and everyone's snowed in. Here is the view out the front door of Kelly's mom's house in Portugal Cove:

Luckily for her the doors to her house --which is in a little dip and therefore prone to being snowed in-- open inward, so with a lot of shovelling she (and the dog!) can get out. You can see the imprint of the door on the snow. Kind of cool, visually.

A good Newfoundland snow is as beautiful as it is treacherous. Here is the view out the kitchen window:

Talking to Kelly's mom this morning and getting these pictures from her almost got us in the snow day mentality.

Snow days were a rite of passage growing up in Newfoundland; as children we were riveted to the evening weather report to see if school was likely to be cancelled the next day, and on bad days when they didn't close school until lunchtime, the older children had to escort the younger ones home safely. I can still recall trudging up Glen Haven Blvd in my burgundy ski suit, a line of kindergartners and first- and second- graders from Country Road Public School trailing along behind me.

A nice memory for a 4 degree sloppy melty day in Toronto.
