I Know ... They Are Horrible Birds

But they are also beautiful!

We have a family of Blue Jays living nearby. While we know that they've probably bullied other smaller birds out of the way for nesting space and food, we were lucky enough to get a glimpse of their soft side.

This parent has just finished feeding some juveniles, and is about to fly off in search of more grub. Or grubs.

I stood in the shadow of the tree and fired off frame after frame of the little ones.

The parent was not that impressed with my behaviour, and flew off to the side where it made a huge racket. It got my attention and posed prettily for pictures while the little ones scurried for cover in the maple leaves. Smart bird, and nice of it to let me get a half-decent picture rather than coming down and pecking my eyes out.

The next day we got up close and personal at the feeder.

Blue jays are a little heavy for our feeder, but they really don't let that stop them. They just flap their wings like crazy to maintain balance.

The reward is a juicy sunflower seed...

...which requires some surgery to extricate.

Got enough pictures? Good. Now leave me alone.

Blue Jays are beautiful bullies aren't they. Sometimes, in the winter, I put out a whole bowl of peanuts for the Jays. They'll devour them in minutes. I love these pictures.
