The Colour Purple

"I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it." (Alice Walker)

Periwinkle grows around our compost bin, down into a flower bed and up against the peeling paint of the garage. It runs up against a fragrant mess of sweet woodruff, which then gives way to what we hope will be a beautiful collection of native plants -- ostrich fern, mayapple, marsh marigold, meadow rue and labrador violet (more purple!)

While technically blue, these forget-me-nots are almost a light purple.

Forget-me-nots grow wild through the north side of the garden; we have to pull out great handfuls every year and we are still rewarded with gorgeous bunches like this. Our old neighbour, Bus, dismissed them as weeds when, in our first summer here, we leaned over the fence every day and asked him, " What's this?" and "What about this?" He thought we were crazy for keeping some of them -- God only knows what he'd think about them being for sale at the garden centre! (Actually, I think I'm kind of with him on that.)

He was a crusty old guy but he taught us a lot about our garden and he helped me rip down a shed one day. The triplets who moved into his house are just not the same.

The grape hyacinths are multiplying nicely:

And the French lilac, despite having sacrificed several buds to the local squirrels' 100 yard diet, is about ready to pop, the Japanese quince tucked in underneath.
